Merced, Merced County
Merced calls itself the Gateway to Yosemite. Highway 140 leaves town and follows the Merced River into the park, a drive of about two hours to Yosemite Valley, and buses make the trip from the train station year-round. Downtown, the old county courthouse of 1875 sits in a shaded square and serves as a history museum.
